5A, 5B- Washington-Tyson's Corner & Dulles Airport

The Dulles airport bus, this line also serves another imporant stop- Tyson's corner, a large retail/office complex just out of reach of the Metrorail system (a line going to Tyson's and Dulles is in the final planning stages). The bus departs from L'Enfant Plaza (Blue/Orange & Green/Yellow lines). Note that the bus leaves from the bus stall on D St. SE east of 7th St. (between 7th & 6th). I tend to exit the station west of 7th St. and have to walk a couple of blocks over to the bus; it's a bit confusing as several of the bus signs in the area say that the 5 buses stop at them; some of the stops are when the bus heads out, others are where the bus stops as it comes in from Virginia.

The bus then zips around the close-in highways to Rosslyn, just in Virginia across the Kennedy Center and the Watergate complex. The bus serves Tyson's at the Westpark bus station, where several bus routes converge. A large park-and-ride bus station in the Herndon area is the only other stop before reaching Dulles Airport.

Service to Dulles runs once an hour, and expect space to be tight with luggage and people. During the rush hours, a seperate bus to Tyson's (5B) runs and the bus to Dulles (5A) skips Tyson's. Fare is $2.50, $1.65 with a rail transfer.

Another alternative to Dulles is the Washington Flyer bus, run by the people who run the airport. It leaves every 30 minutes and costs $8 one-way / $14 round-trip. It arrives at West Falls Church station on the Orange line (take a train to Vienna from downtown).
