The 30's- Wisconsin & Pennsylvania Avenues
The 30 line is one of Metro's flagship routes. Starting in Friendship Heights at the Maryland-DC border, the route travels down Wisconsin Avenue to Georgetown. From Georgetown, the buses travel mainly along Pennsylvania Avenue across the Anacostia, where the routes seperate to serve different major roads.
There are several attractions along the route. Friendship Heights is a major commercial area at theMaryland-District border. The Washington National Cathedral is located near the intersection of Wisconsin and Massachusettes Ave. Georgetown is famous for it colonial-era buildings, shopping, and Georgetown University. Also in Georgetown is the beginning of the Chesapeake & Ohio canal, which extends to Cumberland, MD. The National Park Service runs a towed barge ride along the canal, and you can hike or bike along the trail to your heart's content.
In the central business district, the buses run by most of the major offices north of the National Mall and then past House office buildings south of the US Capitol building. This makes it a very crowded line during most times, and also means that it connects to every line on the subway. The main theater district is also in this central area, making the bus convenient during evenings as well as during the day.
East of the Capitol building is Capitol Hill. The 30's go through the southern portion of the neighborhood. At 8th St SE. is the Eastern Market area, with the historic market and the commercial district south along 8th St. SE, said to Washington's first commercial area. Several shops and a weekend flea market reside are still located within the market halls.
Farther south, the buses cross the Anacostia on the John Philips Sousa bridge, and the routes split and run along several of the major roads to the Green Line subway stations.
